Our History

From humble beginnings in a kitchen to a thriving congregation with a beautiful new sanctuary, our story is one of faith, perseverance, and God’s unfailing grace.

Rev. A.W. Wilson

Founding Pastor (Late 1800s – Early 1900s)

In the late 1800s, twelve dedicated believers gathered in the humble kitchen of Reverend A.W. Wilson with a shared vision — to create a spirit-filled place of worship rooted in the Baptist faith and committed to serving the needs of the East Nashville community. From those early meetings, the congregation that would become First Baptist Church South Inglewood began to take shape, providing a place where worship and service could walk hand in hand.

Through the decades, God has provided for the church’s every need. From those faithful first members to the vibrant congregation of today, the Lord has guided each step. What began in a modest gathering space grew into a thriving fellowship that required multiple expansions and renovations to meet the needs of a growing membership.

The church’s physical home has also evolved over time. Several building projects and upgrades culminated most recently in the construction of a beautiful new sanctuary and fellowship hall — spaces dedicated to worship, ministry, and community events. These facilities stand as a testament to the faith, perseverance, and generosity of God’s people.

While the buildings have changed, the mission has remained constant: to glorify God, to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, and to serve the people of East Nashville and beyond. As FBSI looks toward the future, the same spirit that gathered believers in a kitchen more than 140 years ago continues to inspire every act of worship, outreach, and service.
